Jobs that involve working with heavy vehicles and mobile equipment like that of a diesel technician can be lucrative, especially since the demand for it is projected to grow steadily within the coming years. To become one, you have to complete an entry-level technician program first at an accredited training institution. There are plenty of schools that offer similar courses but differ in their program duration. Here is what you need to know.

Commonly Questions About the Course

Who should sign up for the program?

The entry-level technician course is open to anyone interested in learning how to maintain heavy-duty machinery and equipment. Individuals who have no previous training or knowledge about diesel-powered engines should take this course as their starting point toward being a trailer service technician.

What are the requirements?

Student applicants must be at least 18 years old, and have a high school diploma or taken its equivalent, the General Education Development test. They must also pass the drug screening, have no record of violent felonies within the last seven years, and possess a Social Security card.

How long will it take?

entry-level technicianThe entry-level technician course runs for four weeks, which is shorter than what other schools offer. As a full-time program, classes begin at 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch break and two 15-minute breaks in between.

What does the entire program cover?

The diesel mechanic program only accommodates up to 15 students per class and runs monthly. The curriculum starts with shop safety, then tackles the various parts of a heavy-duty semi-trailer such as brakes, electrical system, tires, wheel-ends, and suspension. Instructors will also cover topics like complete body work, Federal Highway Administration inspections, and preventive maintenance procedures. If you’ve missed any of the lessons, you can attend the classes in the next run at no extra cost.

Is job placement part of the program?

Some post-secondary institutions offer job placement after completing the program. Some have partnerships with trucking companies to help their entry-level technician students start their new careers as diesel mechanics.
