Cockroaches are common home pests that come in many shapes and sizes. And while many people find that all bugs make their skin crawl, these can also create health problems. Therefore, if you find an intruder in your house, turn to cockroach control professionals to provide speedy removal before they can multiply. The guide below lists some of the different species you may encounter in Texas.

American Cockroach

The American cockroach, sometimes called a “waterbug,” is one of the largest roach species and can grow up to one and a half inches. They’re mostly brownish with a yellowish edge around their abdomens and prefer to nest in warm, moist areas such as below sinks or in sewers. They do their best to avoid light and eat decaying food. And like most cockroach species, they can trigger allergic reactions in people who come across them or their shed skins.

Brown-Banded Cockroach

The smaller brown-banded cockroach grows to roughly half an inch and is slenderer than other species. It also has shorter legs and is marked by light yellow bands on its abdomen. This type looks for dark, dry areas, such as closets or electrical devices, to nest and defecate. They’re extremely resilient and can survive on almost any food, so call cockroach control if you see one.

Oriental Cockroach

They nest in both warm and cool environments and may be found outside of homes in scrap piles or trash areas. They can also climb piping, so make sure to seal any openings on the upper floors of your home.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach is the most common in Texas and nests anywhere that has food, moisture, and warmth. These bugs can fly, though they rarely do, and they have two dark bands running down their backs. Immediate cockroach control is necessary as they can carry a number of diseases, including salmonella and typhoid.
