It’s no secret children love sugary drinks; unfortunately, their teeth will experience the consequences. Many of the beverages children crave are the ones that every pediatric dentist will tell them to cut back on. Here are some drinks that require more moderation than others.

5 Drinks Your Child Should Enjoy in Moderation

1. Soda

Imagine your child sitting down and eating ten teaspoons of sugar—that’s how much is in a single can of cola. Others sodas may vary in sugar levels, but not by much. In addition to sugar, sodas contain phosphoric and citric acids, which dissolve enamel. If your child drinks soda, make sure they rinse their mouth with water soon after to avoid frequent trips to the pediatric dentist.

2. Juice

Many people think juice is healthy since it comes from fruits. Unfortunately, most fruit juices are loaded with sugar and often acidic. When shopping, look for 100% fruit juice without the added sugar.

3. Sports Drinks

Sports drinks are often provided to replenish kids’ electrolytes after sports games and practice, but the acidity of these beverages leads to dental erosion and increases plaque. Most sports drinks contain high levels of sugar as well. Water is a much healthier option.

4. Chocolate Milk

Milk supplies necessary calcium for healthy teeth and bones, but when combined with chocolate syrup, the health benefits can get sidelined. While there is less sugar in chocolate milk than soda, it should still be reserved for the occasional treat.

5. Energy Drinks

When kids are having trouble staying awake in school, they may turn to energy drinks. However, you should advise against this since the drinks contain extreme amounts of caffeine that could negatively affect your child’s development. They also have abundant sugar and citric acid.
