Most electricians will recommend having a generator on hand to power your home or business in case of a power outage. These appliances require regular care to stay in top shape. After purchasing a generator, follow the tips below to ensure it’s properly maintained and ready to use when you need it.

How to Care For Your Generator

1. Only Fuel a Cool Generator

You can gas up a car without any thought of how long the vehicle has been running. However, generators use gravity feeds to add fuel to the engine, so it’s critical to wait until the unit is cool to fill it. If you don’t wait, the heat from the appliance may create flames and even potentially explode.

2. Run the Generator Regularly

electricianElectricians and generator manufacturers will suggest running the generator every three months. If the device sits idle for a longer period, the electric starter battery may lose all charge and not work when you need it. Run the generator for 30 minutes before shutting it off to ensure the battery is ready for use.

3. Keep Oil On Hand

Generators need regular oil changes to prevent friction and heat buildup. Generally, electricians recommend changing the oil after 20 hours of use, or one month of use, depending on which one comes first. Some models may need a change after the first 25 hours of use and then again every 50 or so hours. Refer to the manufacturer’s manual to ensure you change the oil accordingly.
