As the weather begins to warm and the snow and ice melt, you may notice that your fence looks a bit different than it did last fall. Winter weather can have an impact on many different types of fences, so it’s important that you take steps to prevent damage and get your fence ready for all the backyard barbecues and gatherings you plan on hosting throughout spring and summer. Here’s what you need to know about the effects of winter on different types of fences.

3 Types of Fences & How They Stand Up to Winter Weather

1. Vinyl Fence

Vinyl fences are fairly durable. However, serious snowfall or ice may cause the fence to sag a bit under the weight. During winter, remove snow and ice from the fence with a brush and shovel around the exterior if there’s more than a few inches up against the surface. In the spring, the fence should be in relatively good shape once the snow melts, though you may want to lightly clean the surface.

2. Wood Fence

fencesWood can warp, break, or harbor mold and mildew when exposed to cold, damp winter conditions. Before winter begins, it’s important to stain or seal the surface of your wood fence with a waterproof coat. Then, once spring comes, look for signs of rot or damage where you may need to replace boards. You should also power wash and re-stain or seal the fence regularly, at least every couple of years.

3. Aluminum Fence

Aluminum is a weather-resistant material, but the weight from a lot of snow or ice can strain the posts. Additionally, the freeze-thaw cycle can weaken the ground around these posts and cause sagging. To prevent this during winter, shovel around the base of the fence when there’s a lot of snow or ice. In the spring, inspect the posts for any signs of damage, like swaying or dipping. If you notice anything, have a professional install new posts where necessary.
