Many of the biggest plumbing hassles are caused by improperly maintained toilets. However, there are a few simple tasks you can perform to prevent costly toilet repairs. Here are just a few to start doing today.

How to Prevent Toilet Repairs

1. Be Mindful of What You Flush

You shouldn’t add anything extra when flushing besides paper that was specifically made to degrade in a sewer or septic system. Otherwise, you are only creating future clogs. Disposable wipes, feminine hygiene products, and paper towels should all go in the trash instead of down the drain.

2. Regularly Check for Leaks

This will allow you to make the necessary toilet repairs or call a plumbing service before any real damage is done. Common signs of a leak include the sound of water constantly running, phantom flushing, and having to hold down the handle or jiggle it to get a complete flush. If there are no visible water puddles around the base, try performing a dye test. Place a few drops of dye in the tank, wait 15 minutes, and check to see if the bowl now contains colored water.

3. Inspect the Tank Every Six Months

It’s easy to overlook the parts inside your tank, but if they are worn or not installed correctly, you could begin to see water usage go way up. To avoid this, inspect the working conditions at least twice a year. Move the tank lever up to ensure it’s properly connected to the flush and fill valves. Make sure to see if the flapper opens easily to allow water into the bowl. As the tank refills, check that the flapper is properly sealed and that the float rises with the water and shuts off when it reaches the fill line.
