Your garage door does an excellent job of protecting your vehicles, sports equipment, and seasonal decorations. However, there are still some risks regarding safety with these mechanisms. To keep your loved ones and your prized possessions in check, memorize the following garage door safety tips.

3 Garage Door Safety Tips

1. Check the Sensors

Most modern garage doors feature sensors on either side, which detect the presence of any person or object in the way of closing. If something is detected, the door will not close, protecting children, pets, and other animals from injury. Test these sensors by putting a plant or ball in front of the sensor and closing your garage door. If the sensors are functional, the door should reverse before closing.

2. Teach Your Children About Potential Hazards

Tell them never to leave their fingers near the tracks in case someone opens the door, and don’t allow them to play with the opener on their own. Some kids like to attempt to hold onto the handle of the door as it rises, so avoid leaving them unattended during playtime.

3. Withhold & Change Passwords

In addition to physical hazards, garage door safety is also about protecting your home from intruders. If you have an access code, never give the password out unless it is an absolute necessity. Remember, anyone who knows or overhears your password essentially has keys to your house. If you do have to give it out, such as to a house-sitter, change the password as soon as that person no longer needs access.
