Once winter comes to an end and the snow begins to melt, you no longer need a snowblower. However, that doesn’t mean you should stash this piece of outdoor power equipment in the garage and forget about it until next year. Follow these four tips to make sure the machinery stays in top shape so it will be ready to use next fall.

How to Properly Store Your Snowblower

1. Get Repairs and Maintenance

Does the snowblower need maintenance or repairs? Consider changing the spark plug, assessing the belts, and flipping the skid shoes to ready the snowblower for next year. Don’t wait until the first snow to deal with these issues. Many outdoor power equipment repair shops are busy at the beginning of the winter as many people realize their machines are broken at once. Getting yours fixed in spring will eliminate any hassle or waiting time.

2. Remove the Fuel

When gasoline is left in a piece of outdoor power equipment that is not being used, it can break down and damage the engine. Over time, gasoline can turn from a liquid into a more viscous mix that may stick in the fuel intake system and cause buildup in the engine. Remove the gas from the snowblower by siphoning it out and storing it in a regulation gas container.

3. Clean the Machine

Most snowblowers are exposed to salt during regular use. Salt can corrode the metal parts of the machinery if left on the surface, so clean the equipment before stowing it away. Use a damp, soft cloth to wipe down the snowblower to prevent rusting and deterioration.

4. Use a Cover

Simply parking machinery in a garage or shed can leave it vulnerable to dust. Place a breathable cover over the snowblower and wrap it up tightly to curb the potential for dirt and moisture buildup or scratches.
