Sewing is a useful skill that everyone should have, and it can be a lot of fun as well! If you’re just getting started with your own sewing machine, you’ll want to stick to the best practices and avoid some common mistakes beginners tend to make. Follow the guide below to start off on the right foot.

Do:

Measure twice.

Experienced seamstresses will tell you that you should measure twice and cut once. You can’t go back after you start your cut. Lay your material out on a flat surface and make the fold with the grain of the fabric. Pin all around it and measure again before making your cut.

Prioritize cleaning.

Get a sewing box to keep all your threads and needles organized, which will help you work more efficiently and avoid accidentally using the wrong materials. Clean your machine regularly, taking care to thoroughly wipe it down before using any light-colored materials.

Don’t:

Neglect your machine.

sewingA poorly functioning sewing machine will work against you. Use your machine cover to keep it clean when not in use. Replace your needle between projects and more often if it starts to dull. Have it professionally serviced every three to four years, and lubricate it every one to three months.

Forget the seams.

Sewing seams tend to be tricky for beginners. Iron your material before lining up seams, then remember that you’ll be working on the inside of the garment in reverse. Any time you finish a seam, iron it flat again to reduce puckering.
