Glass table tops add elegance and sophistication to any space in the home. Since they’re so delicate, however, it’s important to take some precautionary measures to maintain them well and prevent stains and scratches from marring the surface. Here’s everything that you need to know.

How to Maintain Glass Table Tops

1. Use the Right Product

There are many glass cleaning products available, the best of which don’t contain acid or ammonia. If you want to concoct your own formula, simply blend one part white vinegar with two parts lukewarm water. Shake the mixture and spritz it onto the glass. Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth to prevent lint accumulation. If the glass has a filmy finish because it hasn’t been cleaned in a while, create a paste using two parts baking soda and one part white vinegar. Apply with a damp microfiber cloth, allow it to set for about 10 minutes, and then massage it into the surface. Wipe clean with another damp cloth.

2. Wipe Them Down Often

If you have kids or pets, you may need to clean them more frequently to eliminate fingerprints and possible debris. Make it a point to perform a deeper clean with a cleansing product at least a few times a month so that the surface retains its polished appearance.

3. Avoid Damaging Activities

Resist cleaning glass surfaces in the sunlight. This speeds up the drying process and may leave a streaky finish. Avoid placing anything heavy on the surface, particularly along the edges. If you plan to set drinking glasses on the table, be sure to use coasters to prevent telltale condensation rings from forming. If anything spills, simply wipe it up right away to reduce the possibility of stains developing. If the table is particularly valuable, you may even want to invest in a cover to protect it when you don’t use it.
