If you’ve been hurt in a workplace accident or develop a job-related medical condition, workers’ compensation will provide the support you need until you’re ready to work. However, you are required to actively participate in your own medical treatment by seeing your doctor on a regular basis. How often you need to see your doctor depends on the severity of your injuries and how long your medical condition is expected to last.

Frequency of Doctor Visits on Workers’ Comp

In most cases, your doctor will prescribe regular follow-up appointments so they can measure your progress, adjust your treatment, and develop a more accurate prognosis. As your condition stabilizes, however, your doctor might only require you to come in every three months or so, which is the bare minimum. In New York, your doctor must send medical evidence to the Workers’ Compensation Board every 90 days, or you might lose your benefits permanently.

Exceptions for Disabled Employees

workers' compensationIf you’ve been diagnosed with a permanent disability, you likely won’t have to see your doctor as often. Once you’ve reached Maximum Medical Improvement, the Workers’ Compensation Board assumes that your disability will continue indefinitely if you’re still unable to work. Your doctor will decide how often you need to schedule visits and whether you need to work with a specialist.
