Losing weight is a journey. Similar in ways to planning a vacation you’ve always dreamed of taking.  It starts with a dream, a want to do it! Next comes the crucial planning steps.  How are you going to get there? Where do you want to go? What can you do to make it the best experience?  Your weight loss journey is really no different. Keeping it as simple as possible is what works well for most people.  To help you begin your journey, follow these five tips below.

  1. Always stay hydrated. Measure your intake as you begin to make sure you are are getting at least 64 ounces of water per day.  Many people may need more, but a minimum of 64 ounces is a great place to start.  Research shows that dieters who drink more water, tend to lose more weight.  Why? Because staying hydrated can banish hunger.  Don’t drink past the point of thirst after you’ve reached your 64 oz. It is possible to get too much water and in some instances (though it is rare) you can flush important nutrients from your bloodstream, leaving you deficient.
  2. Log your food intake.  There are many ways to accomplish this task.  Try an online app like myfitnesspal or loseit. Another option is to get a small notebook that you can fit in a bag or purse that you can take with you daily.  This is an important step in the beginning of your journey to keep your food portions and calories in check.
  3. Practice the snack tri-fecta.  Keep emergency snacks in three places you call “home”.  A meal replacement bar or shake, fruit, nuts,  or a tuna or salmon pouch are nutritious choices.
  4. Carry mouthwash or chew gum.  You will be less likely to graze if you have minty, fresh breath. Sugar-free mints can work too.
  5. Practice plan-ahead Sunday.  This sets you straight for the week and will help you during the week to deter any unwanted food choices that may come your way.  Prep and plan your snacks, meals, and schedule to get ahead of any known obstacles for the week.
