Your Viking sewing machine is dependable and effective when it comes to long-term performance—especially when you take care of it. While newer machines require less maintenance, your older-model workhorse may need special care if you want it to serve you well. Here’s what you need to know about caring for your Viking.

When Should You Oil Your Viking Sewing Machine?

If your machine was made prior to 1972, you do not need to oil it. Most newer models are pre-lubricated when they’re assembled in the factory. Experts still recommend regular cleanings with a nylon brush, however, especially if you use fabrics that leave behind tiny bits.

To check if your Viking sewing machine needs oil, simply run your finger along the needle bar. A dry needle bar means it’s time for oil. You should also have your machine professionally serviced every year.

How Do You Oil a Sewing Machine?

First, make sure your sewing machine is unplugged and placed on a table in a well-lit environment. If you’re unfamiliar with the names of the parts inside your machine, it will help to have the manual next to you while you work. Remove the cover and take out the bobbin, case, presser foot, needle, and stitch plate. You should also remove the housing for the bobbin and case (also called the race).

Using sewing machine oil, place a small drop of oil where moving metal parts touch one another, turning the hand wheel as you go to ensure you reach every part. This will ensure the parts continue to move smoothly without unnecessary wear and tear. Take care not to use so much oil that it drips or leaves a residue. When you’re done, put the pieces back into place and wipe away any excess oil.
