When hosting a party, keeping packaged ice in the right environment will ensure your drinks remain cold for the duration of the gathering. Here are some easy ways to maintain ice in a cooler.

How to Make Ice Last Longer in a Cooler

1. Store the Cooler in a Shady Place

Throughout the event, move the cooler as necessary to keep it out of the sun. You want to maintain a consistent temperature while changing positions. If it isn't feasible to move the cooler several times during the event, place it under a steady source of shade, like a tree or umbrella.

2. Pack the Cooler as Full as You Can

Fill the cooler to the brim with packaged ice and pack it tightly. This will prevent extra air from becoming trapped in the cooler, lowering the internal temperature and melting the ice faster. Just be careful not to overpack the ice; the lid should still be able to form a tight seal.

3. Prop the Cooler Up Off the Ground

packaged iceSome coolers have small legs to raise them an inch or two off the ground. This encourages airflow underneath the unit to keep the contents colder. If your cooler doesn't have legs, prop it up with a couple of blocks.

4. Keep Opening & Closing to a Minimum

The less you open and close the cooler, the longer the packaged ice will stay frozen. Keep an eye on your guests and anticipate their needs. If you see someone needs a cold beverage or an ice refill from the cooler, offer to get it for them. Then check in with other guests to see if they need their drinks or ice topped up. Compile a list in your head, and make one trip to the cooler.
