If you’ve been accused of driving under the influence, it’s wise to call a DUI attorney as soon as possible. Even if you don’t have a criminal record, the potential penalties could be severe. There are also indirect consequences to consider, like higher insurance premiums and travel restrictions. With help from a seasoned lawyer, though, you may be able to fight the charges or at least negotiate for lesser penalties. Here are the kinds of repercussions a DUI attorney can help you avoid.

3 Common DUI Penalties

1. Incarceration

In the state of Nebraska, even a first-time offender faces up to 60 days in jail for a DUI conviction. If it’s your second offense, on the other hand, you may have to serve up to six months in jail—unless your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) was over 0.15%. In such a scenario, the maximum jail sentence would be one year. Those with two prior convictions face even longer potential sentences—up to three years in prison if their BAC was higher than 0.15%.

2. Fines

DUI attorneyThe fines for a DUI conviction can range from $500 to $10,000. Factors that will influence the total amount include the offender’s criminal record and his or her BAC at the time of arrest. Remember that there are other financial burdens of a conviction, as well. For example, you may have to cover additional court costs and maintain an ignition interlock device.

3. License Revocation

All motorists convicted of DUI in the state of Nebraska will have their licensed revoked. If it’s your first offense, the revocation period may last for six months to one year, depending on your BAC at the time of arrest. Subsequent offenders, on the other hand, face a license revocation of between 18 months and 15 years.
