To keep an eye on your reproductive health, you should visit your gynecologist at least once a year. Many people find this process uncomfortable, embarrassing, or confusing, especially if it’s their first time going. To make your appointment with a women's doctor easier, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

How to Improve Your Appointment With the  Gynecologist

1. Know When to Go

Women should schedule a wellness visit once a year. Gynecologists recommend a Pap smear starting at age 21, and then every three years for women in their 20s, unless more frequent follow up is indicated. You should also visit an OB-GYN if you have specific health concerns, such as pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding.

2. Know What to Expect

GynecologistA visit to the gynecologist will involve a physical exam, during which your doctor will look at and touch your vaginal area, as well as use a speculum to look and feel inside. To do a Pap smear, they'll insert a swab and take a sample of your cervical cells, which may cause a slight pinching sensation. This may be uncomfortable, but it shouldn't be painful. You’ll also likely receive a physical breast exam to look for any abnormalities. Before and after these exams, you'll have time to discuss your health with your doctor and ask any questions.

3. Write Down Questions Beforehand

Leading up to your trip to the gynecologist, think about what you want to ask. For example, if you’re interested in trying a new form of birth control, your annual visit is the best time to bring it up with your gynecologist. These appointments are also an ideal time to bring up any abnormal symptoms you’ve noticed, or discuss any plans if you’re trying to get pregnant. Write down your questions and concerns, and bring the list to your appointment so you don’t forget to ask anything.

4. Don't Be Embarrassed

While a pelvic exam or discussing your sexual history can feel uncomfortable, it's very normal for your doctor. They aren't there to judge you; they're there to help. Try to relax and be honest about your history and your concerns. This is the best way to ensure they can meet your needs.
