Even the thought of a cockroach infestation is enough to make most people’s stomachs turn. Unfortunately, it’s one of the more common pest control problems throughout the U.S. German roaches, in particular, can be particularly problematic in certain areas, including the southwest. Here’s what you need to know.

A Guide to German Roaches

How to Identify Them

German cockroaches are usually light brown and tan, with two black horizontal stripes behind their head. They also have wings, although they typically stay close to the ground and only fly when they feel threatened. They usually travel in groups, so if you spot one, there are likely others nearby.

What They Eat

pest controlLike most cockroaches, German roaches eat almost anything. However, they’re most attracted to sweets, meat, and bread. Their droppings resemble coffee grounds, and you may find these in areas you’d usually find crumbs, such as drawers, cabinets, and behind appliances.

Where You’ll Find Them

Like most pests, roaches enter through gaps in the property, such as the space between the door and frame or window and sill. They don’t usually enter the home in search of food, but shelter. You’ll most likely find them in dark, moist, warm environments, such as kitchens and bathrooms under sinks or near dishwashers and stoves. They may also hide behind picture frames or in cracks in the wall or wallpaper.

Why They’re Problematic

Although they don’t usually attack people or animals, they may bite if they are threatened. They can also spoil food and pose a health hazard with their feces and secretions. Like most roaches, German cockroaches can reproduce quickly and are difficult to kill. DIY pest control methods are not typically effective, and many store-bought brands can be toxic to humans or pets. Instead of trying to eradicate them yourself, call a pest control professional for help.
