Whether you’re renovating your kitchen or remodeling the bathroom, quartz countertops are a fantastic option. Not only do natural stone counters add aesthetic value, but they’re also highly durable and long lasting. To keep yours in top condition, here’s a helpful maintenance guide.

A Guide to Quartz Countertop Maintenance

1. Practice Routine Maintenance

Routine cleaning is the best way to preserve the appearance and quality of countertops. Do a bit of light cleaning every day, wiping down the counters with a washcloth. Unlike most natural stone countertops, you don’t need to seal quartz, as it is particularly tough and moisture-resistant. Practicing daily care should be enough to keep your counters looking beautiful for years to come.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

It’s particularly important with natural stone like quartz, which can weaken and break down over time with the use of high-pH cleansers like ammonia, turpentine, or bleach. Instead, wash with a soft washcloth and mild mixture of warm, soapy water. You can also mix one part dish soap and one part baking soda with a few drops of water to make a paste to remove extra-tough spots.

3. Wipe Up Spills Immediately

Although quartz is naturally moisture- and stain-resistant, extended contact can cause discoloration. Clean up food and drink spills as soon as possible and remove any dried stains with a blunt plastic tool, like a spatula or putty knife. It’s particularly crucial to address spills of high-contrast liquids, such as red wine or acidic substances like citrus juice. Use a microfiber cloth and avoid any sharp or rough tools that can cause scratching.

4. Use Hot Pads

Quartz is also more heat-resistant than many other materials, with the ability to withstand up to 300 degrees. However, it’s still vulnerable to damage from hot pots and pans. Use a heat pad or mat made of thick fabric, metal, or wood to prevent heat-related cracks.
