Builder’s Grade Granite Is Thin & Requires Backing for Support

When determining the grade, granite is evaluated based on thickness, pigment, veins, imperfections, and where it was mined. Thinner slabs of granite fall into the builder’s grade or first level. Although the pre-fabricated material is durable, the 3/8-inch slabs might be too flimsy for counters. The granite requires plywood supports, which is why it’s typically used in furniture-making and commercial applications. There are color limitations, as the slabs come in basic, neutral tones and have few unique marks. 

Mid-Grade Granite Is Highly Durable

With three-quarter inch slabs, mid-grade or level 2 granite is thicker than builder’s grade. Typically quarried in India or Brazil, the stone is also available with more unique markings, fewer imperfections, and more color choices. Mid-grade granite is incredibly durable, which makes it a good choice for home surfaces.  

High-Grade Granite Is Available in Various Colors

The color assortment is what differentiates high-grade granite from mid-tier products. Also imported from India and Brazil, top-tier stone starts at level three and goes as high as level seven. The unusual markings and atypical colors are what makes these slabs coveted among home remodelers.
