Knowing your skin type is the first step toward choosing the right skin care products. Though everyone’s skin is different, it will generally fall into one of four main categories. If you aren’t sure what your skin type is, find out in the following guide as well as how to optimize your daily regimen.

Which Skin Type Do You Have?

1. Dry

Signs of dry skin include rough patches, peeling or cracked skin, and small pores. Sometimes dry skin is a temporary result of environmental factors, but for many, it’s the result of genetics and age. If you notice your skin becoming dry, look for products that add moisture, such as thick cream-based cleansers and lotions. Search the label for phrases like “moisturizing” and “hydrating.” Products that list glycerin and lecithin in the ingredients are effective at combating dry skin. Avoid products that contain alcohols, which can dry out your skin even more.

2. Oily

Often a result of hormonal changes, oily skin can also be caused by stress, diet, and genetics. Skin care products specifically for oily skin often come in foam or gel form and should include salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Facial peels are also helpful for those with this skin type.

3. Normal

Normal skin is neither oily nor dry. Those with normal skin have small pores, few blemishes, and the flexibility to use a wide range of cleansers and creams. If your skin is normal, your main focus is prevention. Choose soap-free cleansers with cetyl alcohol to gently wash away dirt. Soaps tend to contain fats, which can add oil to your skin and potentially clog pores. Follow up with a moisturizing lotion that includes petroleum jelly or mineral oil to help seal in moisture.

4. Combination

Combination skin is a mixture of dry and oily. The oily areas tend to be the forehead, nose, and chin, though it can differ for each person. This skin type is the most common and challenging to treat. Since oily and dry skin types require different skin care products, you will need to experiment to find the best combination of products for your skin. Choose a water-soluble, oil-free cleanser to wash your face. Use two different lotions afterward: a water-based moisturizer for most of your face and an oil-based one on the dry areas.
