It can be frustrating when you turn on a faucet only for it to barely put out any water. This can make taking a shower or washing dishes last forever and could compromise how clean everything gets. It also points to an underlying issue with one or more plumbing fixtures. Here are a few common causes behind low water pressure.

Why Is My Water Pressure Low?

1. Water Heater Issues

Test the cold and hot water plumbing fixtures present throughout your home to determine if the pressure issue is only at one location or all over. Also, by testing the hot and cold faucets separately, you can determine if the fault lies with the hot water heater. If only the hot faucets are experiencing problems, check your water heater for leaks and to ensure the shut-off valve is fully open.

2. Dirty Aerator Screen

If the pressure returns when this part is removed, it simply means you need to clean or replace this part. Typically, letting it soak in a water and vinegar solution is enough to remove any minerals blocking water flow.

3. One or More Leaks

If there isn’t a problem with the pressure reducing valve and the water shutoff valve is fully open, there is a real chance you might have a leak. Inspect all of the plumbing fixtures located throughout your home, including faucets, toilets, the washing machine, the water heater, and all visible pipes.

Look for any stains or moisture below or around these areas, and flush all toilets to listen for gurgling sounds, which could indicate a leak in the line. Also, turn off your water and check the service meter. Return in about a half an hour to see if it has gone up. If so, call a plumber immediately to get to the root of your leak.
