Getting a massage can offer stress relief, as well as mitigate chronic aches and pains. However, many people are unsure of the protocol before getting these spa treatments for the first time. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow that will help you gain all of the benefits of a massage.

Do:

Communicate.

Your masseuse will make sure you know to speak up about how their touch feels. Tell them if a certain move feels good and if they’re pressing too hard or not enough. These professionals want to create a customized treatment for you, and that requires your input on the table.

Relax.

massageMassage artists are best able to do their job when clients are relaxed. Lie on the table and take a few deep breaths to slow down your breathing and relax your muscles. This will help release tension and make it easier to gain the full effects of a massage.

Don’t:

Worry about scents.

Some people are concerned that they might leave a massage smelling intensely like artificially scented lotions or oils. However, masseuses offer various options to choose from to avoid this issue. Most offer all-natural solutions like jojoba, coconut, and olive oil, with essential oils like lavender that further amplify the relaxing effects of the massage. You can also pick unscented options or ask the massage therapist if it’s OK to bring your own oils.

Show up sick.

If you have a cold the day before a massage, contact the masseuse to learn whether they’d prefer you to attend the session or reschedule. Some will ask that you set another time, so you can better enjoy the massage without the distractions of coughing and blowing your nose. Plus, rescheduling will prevent anyone from being exposed to your cold.
