Transplanting is a wonderful way to preserve trees while positioning them in your ideal location. This move isn’t easy on the root ball, however, so you’ll have to take some steps to ensure the plant thrives in its new home. These do’s and don’ts are recommended by tree service experts and will give your trees a boost in their new home.

Do

Move the tree in the correct season.

Transplanting a tree or shrub while it’s in peak growth activity can stunt or kill it. Instead, you should aim to move trees during their dormant periods. Fall is ideal, as the temperatures are still moderate with frequent rainfall. Early spring can also work well, but avoid the extremes of summer or winter, as they’ll cause your tree to struggle.

Water regularly.

Because you’re disrupting the root system of the tree, new transplants will need more water to survive. Plan to water bare-root transplants multiple times each week for the first several years—and more during dry periods. However, too much water could damage your tree, so consult your tree service company to determine the necessary amount and find the healthiest balance.

Don’t

Suffocate the plant.

tree servicesPlanting the root ball too deep can keep air from reaching the roots, which may suffocate or rot the tree. For the ideal tree service, aim to match the original planting depth, as indicated by the ring of soil around the trunk. If you’re buying a new tree that’s wrapped in burlap, leave one or two inches of the root ball above the soil.

Damage the tree during transport.

To avoid hurting the tree’s trunk or roots during transport, always carry the tree from the root ball. Make sure the planting hole is wide enough that the roots won’t bend as the tree is lowered, then gently place it in the hole. This will keep roots from snapping off and dying, and you’ll maximize your tree’s chance at survival.
