Whether you’re moving out of your parent’s house or leaving a college dormitory, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed by the transition. Thankfully, by working with local movers and doing a little sorting and planning, this is easy to remedy. Use the steps below to make the process less hectic.

5 Ways to Streamline the Moving Process

1. Set Up Utilities & Switch Your Mail

Ensure everything is ready for you to move in by setting up your utility, cable, and internet accounts. Assuming no one is currently occupying the space, you should do this a few days before you move in. If the prior tenants aren’t leaving until shortly before your arrival, you’ll need to put this task off. Let the post office know when to begin forwarding your mail to your new location.

2. Cull Unwanted Items

Start going through your belongings at least a month before you move so you don’t pack anything you no longer want or need. Get rid of things you haven’t used in over a year and that don’t have sentimental value. Donate what you don’t want, have a garage sale, or give gifts. If you’re unsure about an object, have a friend or family member hold onto it for you for a week or two. If you don’t miss it, that’s a sign you should toss it.

3. Get Extra Keys Made

Make two or three spare sets of keys and test them in the locks before giving them to family and friends. It’s always reassuring to know a trusted loved one has a copy of your keys in case you get locked out. This is especially important if your landlord’s office isn’t on the premises or nearby.

4. Pack by Room

moversPack your current residence by room. Label every box to make unpacking easier. Keep out essentials such as toiletries, towels, extra clothes, and toilet paper so you aren’t looking for them when the movers bring your items in.

5. Clean Everything

Clean the space you’re leaving with nontoxic disinfectants such as white vinegar and baking soda. Although departing tenants are generally supposed to clean the space prior to your move-in date, they may not have done a thorough job, so be prepared to clean when you first arrive. If your new apartment features carpet, rent a carpet shampooer or steam cleaner to remove built-up dirt and allergens.
