With spring on the horizon, thoughts of shoveling snow will soon be turning to lawn and landscaping care. For those with a garden pond, this means a few extra tasks to prepare it for the new season. Here are some tips for getting ready for spring.

How to Get Your Pond Ready for Spring & Summer

1. Inspect & Repair

First, inspect the water feature of your landscaping for any issues. If you have a water pump, ice may have formed within it and damaged the mechanism. Closely inspect it to make sure every component is working as intended, and repair or replace parts as necessary.

2. Clean

landscapingEven if you covered your pond with netting or other protective gear, winter storms likely left some debris in the water. Clean as much of this material out of the water as possible. If it’s left behind, it can lead to a buildup of sludge and potentially harmful bacteria that will throw off the pond’s environment. Scoop out larger pieces of debris with your hand or a net, and use a cleaning bacteria to get rid of smaller particles.

3. Refresh Water & Move Plants

Changing some of the pond’s water during the early spring sets the stage for a healthy environment until the winter comes again. If you have fish, you may need to change the water slowly to allow them to acclimate. If the water is coming from a municipal supply, you’ll also need to use a purifier to remove chlorine from the pond.

Finally, move any plants that have survived the winter back to their normal locations for the upcoming seasons. If they’ve begun to outgrow their pots, they won’t be able to reach their full growth potential. Trimming them back will give them the room they need to grow and thrive.
