Vintage cars are admired and sought after by car enthusiasts and collectors around the world. And the more original working components they have, the higher their value. However, some of their old mechanical parts, like the transmission, can break down beyond repair. If you’re having this problem with your classic ride, here’s what you can do about it.

What Does the Transmission Do?

A failed transmission is costly to repair, but without it, your classic car will be rendered immobile. Their job is to convert power from the engine to torque, which gets and keeps your vehicle moving. Look out for warning signs like slipping gears, difficult transitions, active leaks, and unusual sounds while shifting that indicate a problem. During repair, a technician will look for the broken parts and have them replaced.

Replacement or Rebuild?

However, there are instances when repairs may not be enough to get the transmission up and running because of the extensive damage. In this case, you have two options: replacement and rebuild. Choose the latter if you want to preserve the authenticity of your vintage car. When rebuilding, the entire system will be disassembled to replace worn out parts like gaskets, seals, and the clutch. After repair and thorough cleaning, it will be reassembled and installed back into the car.

Consider replacing the transmission if too many of its parts are damaged. There is a chance that you can find an original transmission from a similar car to maintain your vehicle’s unaltered state, but you might continue to experience operational problems with time. On the other hand, some modified modern transmission systems can be installed into vintage cars, which can offer years of trouble-free operation and give your ride real power, but is likely to reduce the value of your vehicle.

How to Maintain the Transmission

TransmissionRegardless of whether your transmission is the original, a rebuild, or a replacement, routine maintenance is the key to prolonging its life. At the very least, have it checked for any issues. Schedule a fluid change and periodic flush to remove any debris that hinders proper lubrication. Always pay attention to the first signs of trouble and take your classic car to the professionals for inspections and repairs.
