Leaving your cat or dog behind when going out of town is not always easy. However, knowing they are left in the good hands of a trusted pet boarding facility will make you feel better about their well-being. To ease this transition, make sure to become fully familiar with the kennel and their system. Here are a few questions most pet owners like to know the answers to before they depart.

Your Pet Boarding FAQ

Does my pet get to socialize?

This can vary from one facility to the next. Some will allow animals from different owners to play together, but others do not. This is to prevent any issues that could arise if the pets do not get along. However, a reputable pet boarder should provide enough exercise and play time with a trained attendant. They should not sit in their kennel all day.

Can I bring my own food?

Typically, this is not an issue. It can also be better for cats or dogs that have known digestive or other health issues. Just make sure to pack it in the correct containers and leave special feeding and schedule instructions with the staff.

Should I have my pet vaccinated?

boardingSince multiple animals will be living in a closed environment, you want to make sure your pet is protected against diseases that are easily transmittable. Most facilities will require that dogs are up to date on their DHPP or DAPP vaccine, which protects against canine distemper, infectious hepatitis or adenovirus two, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. In most instances, dogs will also be required to get shots for rabies, Leptospirosis, and Bordetella. Cats should be up to date on FVRCP — prevents rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia — and rabies vaccines.

Can I bring bedding or toys from home?

Most pet boarding facilities do not have an issue with this. In fact, the smells of your home on the toys and bedding will make your animal feel more relaxed about your absence.
