A high-quality countertop is an investment that you’ll want to take care of. Some materials are more durable than others, but you can always maximize its life span by being careful about how you use it every day. With that in mind, the guide below offers tips for preserving its look and feel.

Do:

Use a cutting board.

Even if you have a hard surface such as tile or granite, never cut items directly on the countertop. Fine scratches that aren’t easily visible will create a weak spot in the waterproof sealant, which means your beautiful material will be susceptible to more damage in the future. Larger scratches will be easily visible in the light, destroying the counter’s appearance.

Wipe up spills immediately.

countertop Your countertop likely has a waterproof sealant on it, but it’s not designed to withstand pools of liquid left sitting. Even the minerals in tap water are capable of creating a crusty buildup on the surface, while darker liquids can stain. Wipe up all spills immediately. Then dry the surface with a soft towel.

Don’t:

Expose it to heat.

Heat can scorch or discolor all types of materials, and may even cause cracks. Never place a hot pan directly on the countertop. Instead, use a trivet or wood cutting board as a heat buffer.

Use harsh cleaning supplies.

Depending on the chemicals in your cleaning supplies, it can dull the surface of your countertops, discolor it, or eat through the sealant. Use soap and hot water for everyday cleaning. When you need something more thorough, use solutions specifically formulated for your kitchen material.
