The winter and early spring months can get pretty long in the Northeast. If your students are itching to get out of the classroom for a bit, there are still plenty of field trip opportunities that can work in cold weather. If you want to give your students a chance to learn in a new and interesting environment, here are some ideas for school trips that you can take in cold weather.

Where to Go on School Trips When the Weather Is Cold

1. Museums

Museums are usually indoors and provide plenty of learning opportunities in all different subjects. You can go to an art museum to spawn kids’ creativity, a science museum to learn about biology or earth science, a history museum to view relics from the past, or a kids’ museum that allows young students to try hands-on activities.

2. Planetariums

Though you may not want to spend a ton of time outdoors in the winter, the open sky still offers plenty of interest. A planetarium allows you to give your students a look at some unique constellations and learn about space exploration; this will certainly pique their interest in astronomy.

3. Aquariums

4. IMAX® Theaters

Really, any movie theater could provide a nice break for students. However, IMAX theaters offer an immersive experience and often show educational content. See if there are any showings of movies about space, history, or travel that are related to your current studies.

5. Winter Sports Complexes

If you are looking to spend some time outdoors in the winter, head to a ski lodge or winter sports complex where students can get active. This is likely to be especially popular with older grades, but there are winter sports options for people of all ages and skill levels.
