When a loved one has passed away, it’s important to honor that person’s life with a funeral or memorial service. While the terms funeral and memorial are often used interchangeably, they have their differences. It’s essential to understand the meanings of these services before deciding how you will honor your loved one. Here is a closer look at the differences between funerals and memorials.

What is a Funeral?

memorial serviceA traditional funeral is a service to commemorate a deceased person with their body present. A funeral service is typically held at a funeral home or a church. Music is often played to help calm family members’ nerves and to allow them to cope with their loss. These services can be personalized, as the family may choose to play the deceased’s favorite song. Additionally, there are at least a few eulogies to help family and friends express their feelings.

After the service, the remains are transferred to and buried at a gravesite. Some funerals incorporate cremated remains that are typically held in a small urn, which are then buried or scattered.

What is a Memorial Service?

A memorial service honors the life of a loved one just like a traditional funeral and can also include music and readings. The main difference is that the body of the loved one isn’t present at the service. A memorial service can take place weeks or even months after a person has died and has greater flexibility as to where it’s held. For example, some people may choose to hold this service at a relative’s home, at a park, or a beach. Many choose to hold it in a funeral home, as they’re equipped to host several guests at a time.
