Dentures give you a fuller smile and a more comfortable bite. It's important to take care of the prosthetic to ensure it remains safe and healthy. Below are a few tips for preserving your dentures and ensuring they stay in good condition for the long-run.

How to Take Care of Your Dentures

1. Remove, Soak, & Store Them Every Night

Most types of dentures require constant moisture to retain their shape. At the end of each day, remove them and soak them in cool water or in a mild solution as advised by your dentist. If the prosthetic has metal parts, be aware that harsher solutions could damage the metal. Removing them at night also gives your gum tissue an opportunity to rest.

2. Don't Use Whitening Products

The bleaching agents used in most teeth whitening products contain harsh chemicals that are not meant for dentures. Besides that, many whitening products contain peroxide, which typically doesn’t brighten the color of the teeth. Avoid toothpaste, mouthwashes, strips, and any other items that aim to whiten, as it can corrode the prosthetic.

3. Stay on Top of Adjustments & Care Needs

denturesDentures that are too loose or too tight are not only painful and awkward, but they can cause mouth sores, bleeding, and infections. If you sense a problem with them, visit a dentist right away to get them adjusted as necessary. Also, schedule routine visits with a dentist so you can monitor your oral health and address any issues before they have a chance to develop into more serious problems.
