Granite slabs are a popular countertop material. They travel a long and complex journey from the quarry to your kitchen; learning the stops it makes before getting to your home will allow you to appreciate its beauty even more. Below, you’ll find a start-to-finish explanation of how granite slabs are made.

Your Guide to Granite Slab Manufacturing

The Quarry

graniteGranite is mined from quarries throughout the world, with Brazil being home to the largest concentration. It’s found close to the Earth’s surface and is separated from the ground by dynamite. Once the raw granite is transportable, it’s moved throughout the world to larger facilities that can then process it into smaller slabs. India is another major supplier of granite; and in the U.S., Vermont and Virginia are two of the leaders, though their granite is mostly used for building supplies.

Fabrication

Once the raw granite reaches a fabrication facility, it’s cut into countertop-sized slabs using large diamond wire saws. This process can take hours depending on the size of the raw granite and the precision required. Once cut to size, the granite is polished in heavy machinery to bring out the stone’s natural color. Once finished, the polished—though still rough—granite is transported to the countries where they’ll be sold.

The Supplier

The final process of granite slab fabrication comes down to the supplier. They receive the granite from the fabrication plant and cut and polish it to standard sizes. For custom countertops, the supplier will first take measurements throughout your kitchen or commercial space and then cut the granite to your specifications. Once in place, you can count on having a beautiful, durable surface that meets all of your aesthetic and culinary needs.
