Osteoporosis and low bone density affect nearly 44 million people in the United States alone. And while the condition isn’t necessarily debilitating, it might mean you need to make some small lifestyle changes. After all, you don’t want to have an MRI in the near future because of a broken bone. Here are some tips you can implement in your daily life to keep your bones strong and healthy.

How to Manage Osteoporosis

1. Eat Foods That Contain Calcium

Eating foods rich in calcium helps strengthen your bones. Dark, leafy greens like spinach, kale, and broccoli are great sources of the mineral, as is plain yogurt. So are chicken bones, so save a few from your chicken dinner and add them to soup stock.

2. Practice Proper Posture

In addition to doing wonders for your posture, sitting up straight reduces the amount of pressure put on your spine daily. Those with osteoporosis or low bone density should also avoid hunching and always pick up objects by bending at the knees instead of at the waist.

3. Take Your Vitamins

If your daily diet doesn’t always contain calcium-rich foods, make sure to supplement it where you can. For example, one chewable tablet taken daily with any meal will help you meet your recommended intake. Magnesium, which helps the body to absorb calcium faster, is a must as well. Vitamin D is also important for building strong bones, and it helps prevent various cancers and heart disease.

4. Make Your Home Safe

You can make a few changes at home to help prevent falls and an unwanted MRI. Put nonslip rugs/mats in the bathroom, put up and use handrails for stairways, clear major walkways and stairs of items that could be tripped over, keep items that are used often in easy-to-reach, low places, and make sure your home is well-lit.

5. Get Your Eyes Checked Regularly

You would be surprised by the number of broken bones and MRIs that could be avoided every year by simply getting your eyes checked. If your vision seems blurry, any environment can be unsafe and it can be easy to miss trip hazards. Have your eyes examined every one to two years, and always wear your prescribed glasses or contacts.
