During the colder months of the year, there’s nothing like slipping on a cashmere sweater before getting out of bed, or using a cashmere scarf to brave the walk to your car. While they might seem too delicate for conventional laundry methods, there are many alternatives for refreshing your ultra-soft knits. To take care of your cashmere at home and at the dry cleaners, use the following tips.

An Upkeep Guide for Cashmere Products

1. Wash Sparingly

Unlike cotton T-shirts and polyester undergarments, cashmere sweaters and scarves should only be washed every three times you wear them. Plus, they can’t be thrown in with the rest of the load in your washing machine—you’ll need to wash your cashmere garments by hand in a sink filled with warm water and delicate soap. To finish up, rinse them with cold water and lay them between dry towels instead of wringing dry.

2. Schedule Monthly Trips to the Dry Cleaners

dry cleaningDuring the colder part of the year, when you’re getting the most use out of your cashmere essentials, take them to the dry cleaners at least once a month. Unlike hand washing, this process doesn’t use water, but a liquid solvent called perchlorethylene. The team at the dry cleaning facility will start by treating any stains on your cashmere sweaters and scarfs, then conducting an all-over clean to remove odors and perspiration. When this is finished, they’ll check for spots again before folding or packaging your items for delivery.

3. Store Properly

Cashmere knit is known for being light and thin, which makes it versatile enough for a variety of temperatures. However, this also means you can’t store your cashmere sweaters on typical hangers—the sharp angles and pull of gravity will stretch out the sweater. To keep them in shape, fold your sweaters and scarves and store them on a dry, cool shelf. If you have several, keep them in sealable bags to prevent the fibers from rubbing against one another and pilling.
