If you are having difficulty conceiving, there are options beyond infertility treatments and in vitro fertilization. One possibility is surrogacy, in which the pregnancy is carried by someone else. There is more than one type of surrogacy, so here's what you need to know about your options.

Traditional Surrogate

A traditional surrogate is inseminated with the sperm of the father or a donor. However, the eggs used are the surrogate's, making her the biological mother of the child. This type of surrogacy may be used in cases when the mother is unable to contribute healthy eggs, but in almost all circumstances, a gestational carrier is preferred.

Gestational Carriers

In VitroA gestational carrier is not biologically related to the child. Instead, the parents' egg and sperm or those of donors are implanted through in vitro fertilization. While in vitro treatment is more expensive than the artificial insemination used for traditional surrogacy, it is preferred because there is less risk for both parties.

If you need in vitro fertilization or are interested in using a gestational carrier, the Pacific In Vitro Fertilization Institute is here to help. Based in Honolulu, HI, and serving the state since 1985, this fertility clinic also provides fertility preservation treatments and options for LGBT couples hoping to have children.
