Winter weather causes havoc on your plumbing, and—if you get your drinking water from a well—it can lead to your water source freezing due to low temperatures. This could leave you without water, disrupting daily activities such as cooking, washing clothes, and showering. Below are some key tips from water well contractors to help you make sure your well does not freeze during the winter.

How to Keep Your Water Well from Freezing

1. Cover the Pump

Well contractorWell contractors advise that your well pump and plumbing components should not be left in the open air. The pump housing needs a cover to protect it from the elements and frigid winter temperatures. Additionally, you should make sure to add weatherstripping to the cap to prevent drafts of cold air entering the enclosure.

2. Add Insulation

To insulate the pipes exiting the well shaft, you can purchase foam pipe insulators—which look like swimming pool noodles with a slit up the side—at any home improvement or hardware store. They protect the pipes from freezing winter temperatures. For additional insulation, wrap the pipes in a fleece blanket or even old sweatshirts.

3. Add a Heat Lamp or Heater

Place a heat lamp near the pump and pipes to keep the enclosure warm. For best results, use an incandescent bulb of 100 watts or greater. Lower wattage bulbs or LEDs won't produce enough heat to prevent freezing. Alternatively, use an electric-powered ceramic heater. These provide enough warmth to prevent freezing on cold days.
