One of the biggest consequences of the digital age is neck pain. Whether you sit a desk all day, spend hours on a smartphone, or like most Americans do both, maintaining the same position causes muscles to tighten. This tension often leads to uncomfortable muscle pain and headaches. Fortunately, these three quick and easy stretches are designed to ease pain temporarily and help relax and strengthen the muscles in and around your neck.

3 Simple Exercises for Neck Pain

1. Shoulder Rolls

For some individuals, neck pain is a result of tight shoulders. In such cases, stretching the shoulders helps reduce or completely eliminate the pain. Shoulder rolls are an excellent exercise for this problem, and it's also incredibly easy to do in any location. In either a standing or sitting position, simply roll your shoulders backward for 10 reps, followed by reversing the movement forward for 10 reps. Repeat the process two to three times until you notice the tension begin to release.

2. Side Tilt

neck painThe side tilt stretch directly targets neck muscles. For this process, use your right hand to gently pull your head toward your right shoulder. Hold this position and breathe deeply for around 10 to 20 seconds before slowly returning your head to the center position. Next, complete the stretch by tilting your head to the left side and utilizing your left hand. Repeat as needed, and when finished, gently roll your neck in a 360-degree motion to help relax the muscles and alleviate neck pain.

3. Bridge

The bridge is common in yoga as well as a variety of sports and physical education programs. While the move extends multiple muscles, it allows you to adjust the stretch level of your neck muscles. You need enough floor space to lie down, and for comfort, it's best to utilize a yoga mat or soft towel or choose a carpeted area. After lying down on your back, bend your knees and place your feet on the ground. Then lift your back off the ground and hold for 30 seconds.
