When you are behind the wheel of a car, few things are more important than being able to see the road ahead. However, even small vision changes can compromise your ability to see clearly. Here is a little more information about the vision requirements necessary to drive, and how your eye doctor can help you improve your sight.

Legal Vision Requirements

While each state has slightly different vision requirements to determine driving eligibility, in Kentucky, potential drivers must pass a visual acuity test of 20/60 or better. Drivers must also be able to have a field of vision that’s a minimum of 35 degrees for both their left and right side-fixations.

Most states require people who have vision issues, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, to wear corrective lenses every time they drive a vehicle and to keep their vision prescriptions up to date.

How to Improve Your Vision

eye doctorFortunately, having vision issues doesn’t necessarily exclude you from being able to become a legal driver. By working with your eye doctor, you can improve your vision through a range of different treatments.

Before your eye doctor talks with you about whether glasses, contacts, or corrective vision surgery is right for you, they will perform a thorough eye exam to determine your level of visual acuity. Next, they will talk with you about your lifestyle and personal preferences to decide which correction method would work best for your situation.
