Whether you have an infected or decaying tooth, are preparing for surgery, or have periodontal disease, there may be many reasons your dentist has recommended a tooth extraction as the best course of action for your oral health. Once the procedure is complete, aftercare is essential to make sure you heal properly. Here’s what you should and shouldn’t do in order to get back on the path to a healthier smile.

Do:

Rest.

After a dental procedure, resting for at least 24 hours will help the healing process go smoothly. Keep activities like talking and chewing to a minimum and elevate your head on a pillow to cushion your mouth. Swelling is perfectly normal, but to ease it a little, apply ice to the area in a rotation of 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, then after the first day, switch to a warm, moist cloth in the same increments of time.

If your dentist did not prescribe pain medication, take one over-the-counter product with anti-inflammatory properties, such as ibuprofen.

Eat soft food.

dentistEven actions like using a straw can be harmful during the healing process, so stick to soft foods like gelatin, mashed potatoes, applesauce, lukewarm soups, and yogurt. Try to avoid anything that’s too hot or too cold as well as foods with excess sugar, spice, or acid that may irritate your mouth and gums.

Don’t:

Smoke.

Smoking is not good for your teeth and gums but can be even worse after a tooth extraction. It can lower your immune system and make it more difficult for the wound to heal. Try to avoid smoking for at least 48 hours after the procedure. If this is a big challenge for you, nicotine patches may be helpful in a pinch.

Ignore instructions from your dentist.

You may feel much better after your tooth extraction, but it’s important to follow your dentist’s instructions. Gently biting down on gauze helps the wound clot and heal faster. In the days that follow, swishing your mouth with salt water keeps the area clean. If the extraction site is particularly painful or you don’t feel you're getting better within a few days, call your dentist. You may need to come back in for a follow-up appointment.
