Flossing is essential for removing plaque, fighting gum disease, and keeping your teeth healthy, but the traditional waxed string method proves uncomfortable for many. Fortunately, there are alternatives that dentists recommend that can be just as effective when used properly. If standard floss isn’t for you, try the following solutions.

Popular Substitutes for Traditional Floss

1. Floss Threaders

With traditional floss wrapped around your fingers, it can be difficult to reach certain areas of your mouth, meaning you may not be as thorough as necessary to protect your oral health. If this sounds familiar, try pre-threaded floss. This solution allows you to floss one-handed and makes it easier to access those hard-to-reach spots.

2. Water Flossing

Water flossers or water picks are excellent dental health choices. These handheld devices shoot a steady stream of pressurized water to dislodge plaque. To use them, fill the reservoir with warm water. Lean over the sink basin, insert the device into your mouth, and turn it on. Trace your gumline with the jet of water, allowing excess fluid to spill into the sink. Start at the lowest pressure setting and adjust to your comfort level as needed.

3. Floss Picks

dentistDue to their portability and disposability, floss picks have recently grown in popularity for travelers. A small string is stretched taught between a plastic handle, allowing users to floss without wrapping the thread around their fingers. They must be disposed of after each use, however, so buy in bulk.

4. Interdental Brushes

Interdental brushes are particularly useful for those with braces or joint issues. Akin to a miniature toothbrush, these consist of narrow bristled heads attached to short handles. Insert it between your teeth at an angle, even it out, and then push it in and out once. Some brands may advise you to twist the brush or push it through multiple times. Rinse the brush with water or mouthwash when you’re done, as they can be reused for up to a week. While convenient for those who have trouble with floss, they aren’t practical if your teeth don’t have enough space between them for the bristle. If you’re unsure if these are right for you, ask your dentist.
