One of the most important pieces of power equipment you can own is a generator to power your home in an emergency. While this is a major convenience and provides additional safety during a disaster, it needs to be handled correctly to avoid creating hazards of its own. Here's what you should do to run your generator safely and responsibly.

Do:

Read the manual.

Your generator's manual includes both general safety tips and instructions specific to the model of generator you've chosen. Before you start the engine—and preferably before you need to use the generator—read the manual at least once.

Consult an electrician.

When setting up your generator to power your home, don't handle the job yourself. An incorrect setup can damage your home's wiring and create active hazards. Have an electrician look over your appliances and advise you about the best way to connect the generator.

Turn it off afterward.

Whenever you're not actively using the generator, especially when you leave the home, turn it off. Not only will this save fuel, but it will also minimize the risk of accidents from fire, electrical problems, and dangerous fumes.

Don't:

Run a generator in an enclosed space.

A generator works in much the same way as a car engine, and like a car, it produces fumes which can be dangerous. Make sure the area with the generator has plenty of ventilation. It might be necessary to keep the equipment outside where there’s a lot of space.

Transporting it with fuel inside.

If you need to move your generator, empty the fuel tank. The cap on the tank was designed for a stationary generator and may not keep fuel inside when moved, jostled, or tilted.

Overload your generator.

Your generator's capacity isn't unlimited. Trying to plug in too many devices can overload the system and cause shorts. Don't use heavy power equipment and other energy guzzlers while relying on your generator.
