Whether you’re moving, trying to declutter, or simply looking to maximize the space in your home, self-storage facilities provide a safe and secure location to keep your extra belongings. However, there are some items that can’t be left in a storage unit. Most facilities have guidelines you must abide by to ensure the safety of everyone’s possessions, and it’s important to know what these are before you start moving anything in. Here are a few examples of what you shouldn’t place in storage.

What Not to Store in a Storage Unit

1. Perishable Food

Even in climate-controlled units, perishable foods don’t belong in storage. Pet food, produce, and meats fall into this category. They can attract unwelcome insects and rodents that will cause damage to your other possessions.

2. Plants

They need sunlight, water, and fresh air to grow, which they will not receive inside a storage unit. Placing them in an enclosed space with damp soil can also cause bad odors and mold to develop.

3. Hazardous Materials

Anything that has the potential to catch fire, explode, pose a health risk, or create substantial damage if opened or spilled is considered to be hazardous. This includes gasoline, propane, cleaners, motor oil, fireworks, fertilizer, and paint.

4. Weapons

In most cases, firearms and ammunition cannot be put into storage. If you don’t want to have weapons in the house, you may be able to store them at your local gun shop or shooting range.
