They might rhyme, but the difference between a strain and a sprain might determine whether or not you need a hard cast. Each injury affects a different part of the body, though both can be severe. The Foot & Ankle Specialists of Cincinnati are here to explain the difference:

  • Strain. This injury occurs when you overstretch or twist a muscle or tendon. Occasionally there is a partial or complete tear. Common causes include improperly lifting heavy objects and other sports or activities that involve extensive gripping. Strains can be acute or chronically occurring, such as repetitive motion injuries. Recovery involves the RICE formula: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. Carefully applied cold packs ease inflammation, while over-the-counter medications can help alleviate pain. Contact a health care provider when the pain is particularly severe; a splint may be needed in some cases.
  • Sprain. Stretching or tearing of a bone ligament results in a sprain. Most commonly affecting the ankle and wrist, sprains result from high impact collisions that throw a joint or ligament out of position. See a health care provider immediately if you can't move, experience severe pain or numbness in the injured area, have swelling over bony areas, or are otherwise unsure of how to proceed. An X-ray may be needed to confirm whether the injury is a sprain or fracture.
