Your car’s engine is essential for it to work properly. But like any other auto part, it can break and wear down. However, it can be difficult to tell whether the problem your car is experiencing is related to the engine. If you notice any of the following signs, take your vehicle to an auto mechanic to see if you need an engine replacement.

How Can You Tell if You Need an Engine Replacement?

1. Unusual Sounds

Unusual noises often indicate engine issues. If it makes a loud knocking sound while you’re driving or you notice excessive rumbling during acceleration, that’s an indication that the camshaft and pistons are no longer working in sync, and the engine bearings are worn. A whining noise may also occur when engine bearings are about to fail. This eventually causes the engine to seize up. A clicking sound while driving at low speeds indicates stuck hydraulic lifters or low oil pressure, which should be addressed by a trained technician.

2. Smoke or Steam

Smoke will come out when the engine is extremely hot. Without immediate repairs, you could blow a head gasket or melt other vital components, requiring a complete engine replacement.

3. Oil Issues

Look for metal shavings when you’re changing your oil; this indicates that the engine is worn. These thin metal fragments are generally silver or gray. Clean oil should be yellow or amber and free of any suspended particles. Also, look for oil spots after your car has been sitting in one spot for a while. This indicates that oil is leaking from somewhere within the engine system. Additionally, insufficient or dirty oil will cause your engine to overheat and seize up.
