A ceiling fan attracts dust and dirt. Without regular cleaning, it can become an eyesore and even cause health problems for people who have allergies. Since fans are not within easy reach, they take some special considerations when it comes to cleaning. Below are a few pointers for making your ceiling fan look like new.

Take Preliminary Precautions

First, turn off the ceiling fan and wait until it comes to a complete stop. Place a large piece of painter's tape over the light switch, so no one comes in and inadvertently flips the fan on while you're working on it. Have a chair or stepladder handy.

Vacuum the Blades

Most of the dirt on a ceiling fan accumulates on the blades. Often, the easiest way to remove it is to use a hose attachment on a vacuum cleaner. If the attachment is long enough, you may be able to get the bottom and sides of the blades while staying on the ground. But if the attachment doesn't reach, you will have to stand on a chair or stepladder. Practice caution and have someone in the room with you to hold the ladder steady.

Wipe Down With a Damp Clothceiling fans

In addition to your quick vacuuming, dip a soft, lint-free cloth into a solution of equal parts white vinegar and distilled warm water. Wring it out, and wipe it across the blades, bulbs, and globes of the lights. Repeat as necessary; it may take a few passes to get rid of stubborn deposits.

A clean ceiling fan will not only spruce up the room, but it will also do its job more effectively by limiting the dust and allergens it releases into the air.
