From the first blossoms of the season to the return of sunny and temperate days, the arrival of spring brings a number of welcome environmental changes. However, some of these changes can pose risks to your eye health, and a little preparation will help keep you better protected. Below are three eye care tips to bear in mind with the coming of spring.

3 Springtime Eye Care Recommendations

1. Wear Sunglasses

Sunglasses safeguard the eyes from damaging ultraviolet rays that radiate from the sun. Carry sunglasses with you at all times, and put them on whenever you're outdoors. Check that they have 100% protection from both UVA and UVB rays. If remembering sunglasses is too much of a hassle, consider getting photochromic lenses in your regular prescription glasses. These lenses adjust naturally to the amount of light they are exposed to.

2. Beware of Allergens

eye carePollen levels tend to spike in spring, which can mean significant discomfort for people with allergies. Red, watery, and puffy eyes often go hand in hand with allergies. If you are sensitive to outdoor allergens, limit the time you spend outside, and wash your hands thoroughly throughout the day. You can also use artificial tears to help reduce the eye-related symptoms stemming from seasonal allergies.

3. Visit an Eye Doctor

Just as you prioritize spring cleaning and spring break vacations within your springtime schedule, you should also make it a point to schedule an annual eye doctor appointment, too. A comprehensive exam will help you monitor the condition of your eyes and stay on top of any issues or potentially risky symptoms that may be present. It’s also a perfect opportunity to get a new pair of prescription sunglasses or upgrade your existing eyeglass lenses.
