An essential duty for any responsible car owner is diligently replacing the fluids that your vehicle requires to run. That list goes well beyond a simple oil change. Here’s a rundown of the four most important fluid changes to know about.

The Most Important Car Fluids to Replace on a Schedule

1. Motor Oil

The most crucial component of your vehicle is the engine, and motor oil is its lifeblood. The oil keeps the engine well-lubricated, preventing the pistons from rubbing and creating dangerous friction. Due to improved technology, the old rule of thumb of conducting an oil change every three months or 3,000 miles — whichever comes first — is considered out of date. These days, your vehicle should be able to travel at least 5,000 miles (and often more) before the oil goes bad.

2. Wiper Fluid

The fluid allows your wipers to competently clean off any muck, rain, or snow blocking your visibility. If you replace the liquid at least once per year, you will avoid any dangerous visibility issues.

3. Brake Fluid

When you push on your brake pedal, it uses a system of fluids to create the pressure necessary to stop the wheel. Eventually, the fluid becomes full of excess moisture and detritus, lowering its effectiveness. Check your owner’s manual for the exact interval when you should replace the liquid, and consult a mechanic if your brakes seem slower to respond than usual.

4. Coolant

Because of how active your engine is, it produces a tremendous amount of heat. Thanks to a fluid known as coolant, you can contain that high temperature, so it never escalates to the point that your engine overheats and becomes damaged. When it’s time for your oil change, have the auto technician examine your coolant to see if it needs flushing as well.
