During heavy rainfall, area flooding, or plumbing emergencies, water could make its way to your home’s foundation. A sump pump will help prevent structural damage as well as mold and mildew growth that could make you sick. Installed in the basement or crawlspace under the house, the device collects water flowing toward the building and redirects it away from the property. To ensure the equipment works when needed, follow the maintenance advice below.

3 Ways to Keep Your Sump Pump in Working Order

1. Check Equipment Positioning

Sump pumps include impellers to draw water in. If large debris gets sucked into the basin, it could bend the impeller and cause the pump to vibrate. The movement could tilt the pump out of position or cause the float ball to stick, making it difficult for equipment to work correctly. The natural vibration of the motor and pressure from water can also move the pump out of position. Each time the sump pump is used, check the inlet valve for debris. Remove the debris before it can damage the impeller. At the same time, make sure the device is upright and the float ball moves.

2. Test the Device

By routinely testing equipment, you’ll have peace of mind knowing it won’t malfunction when it’s needed. To examine performance, fill the basin with enough water so that the activation switches turn on. You should eventually see water drain from the pit as it’s directed through the discharge pipe. The entire process should happen quickly. If water remains in the pit or drains slowly, call a repair specialist for help.

3. Examine the Power Source

Equipment should be plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). The outlet should have a test button on the panel. If the GFCI trips when the button is pushed, it is working correctly. You should also make sure electrical cords are intact and free of fraying or any exposed wiring.
