Your gutters are essential for protecting your walls and eaves from water damage during wet weather. When they are in poor condition, your home is at risk for mildew, wood rot, stains, flooding, and foundation damage. To prevent this, watch for the following signs that you need gutter replacement.

When to Repair or Replace Your Gutters

1. Rust

If you have metal gutters, any paint or protective coating will wear away eventually, leading to visible rust at joints and damaged areas. Not only is this unattractive and a source of stains, but if allowed to continue, rust can eat through the metal and cause holes.

2. Leaks

GuttersHoles in your system are most common at joints and corners. Not only do they let water escape and risk damaging your home, but they'll get worse over time if not addressed. One or two leaks can be patched, but if you're starting to see them more frequently, you need to replace your gutters.

3. Sagging

A gutter system relies on a slight, smooth slope to direct water to the downspout. If they sag, water will not flow in the right direction or may overflow the sides. Make sure your next system has adequate support to prevent the problem from coming back.

4. Recurring Clogs

Any gutter will get clogged if it goes long enough without cleaning. But if you frequently deal with clogs — especially in the same spot — it can indicate a crack, snag, or flaw that is catching and holding debris.

5. Water Damage

Take a moment to walk around the outside of your home. Can you see any water stains on the side of the building, or splashed mud at the base? Inside, are you having problems with damp and mildew on the top floor or in the basement? These are clear signs your gutters aren't directing water correctly.
