Becoming a new parent is exciting, but it can also be challenging when you’re learning to meet your baby’s needs, especially when it comes to health care. Infants communicate through crying, and it can be difficult to differentiate between minor health issues and serious ones. Here are some common ones to watch for.

A Guide to Infant Health Issues

1. Diarrhea

The frequency and consistency of infant bowel movements can vary depending on their diet. Frequent, watery bowel movements could indicate an infection or allergy and could lead to dehydration. Watch for dry eyes and mouth, a decrease in wet diapers, and lethargy; these are signs your infant should see a doctor.

2. Colds

health careBabies typically get their first cold within a year. Coughing, runny nose, sneezing, and even a mild fever are normal. See a health care provider if your baby is having trouble breathing, younger than 12 weeks of age, or has a rectal temperature higher than 100.4°.

3. Cradle Cap

This condition can be detected when you see a layer of flaky, dry skin on top of your baby’s head. This issue isn’t painful or itchy for the baby and will typically go away on its own. The cause of cradle cap is unknown, but it is not a result of poor hygiene. Gently shampooing your baby’s hair a few times a week can help clear it up.

4. Umbilical Hernia

An umbilical hernia causes a baby’s navel to protrude, sometimes more so when the baby cries. Most of these types of hernias are painless and go away on their own by the time a child turns five. If it doesn’t go away, it can be repaired via a minor surgical procedure.

5. Constipation

Babies can become constipated particularly when they start eating solid foods. If you notice your baby’s stools are unusually firm or less frequent than once a day, switch your formula brand (if your baby is drinking formula). For babies eating solids, add some high-fiber foods like barley cereal, as well as foods with a lot of liquid like pears.
